MATEUSZ SZOT " EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE " Goal: PARALYMIAD 2028
Mateusz Szot is a man whose passion for swimming has accompanied him throughout his life. As a multiple champion and medalist at the Polish Masters Championships , he has frequently stood on the podium, winning the highest honors in swimming competitions.
In 2018, he triumphed, taking 1st place in the 50m breaststroke and 3rd place in the 200m individual medley. The following year, he took 2nd place in the 100m. His swimming career is not only marked by personal successes, but also by working with children and young people, to whom he passed on his love of the water.
Unfortunately, on May 18, 2022, Mateusz's life changed dramatically . A tragic fall from a height resulted in serious injuries. The accident resulted in severe cerebral swelling and a hematoma, which caused the most problems, five broken ribs, a fractured left scapula, and damage to the thoracic and lumbar spine. As a result of his injuries, spinal stabilization and brain decompression were necessary due to the increasing swelling and hematoma.
Today, despite adversity and partial paralysis following an unfortunate accident, Mateusz relentlessly pursues his dreams. His determination to return to health and sport is inspiring, and his goal is the 2028 PARALYMIADA!
The first decompression was performed on May 18, 2022, the next on May 23, 2022.
The first two weeks in the hospital were life-threatening. Doctors didn't give him a chance, saying he'd be a vegetable, unable to speak, hear, or walk. They told his parents to prepare for the worst. However, they didn't accept this news and stood by him with great faith, constantly telling him he had to fight, that he couldn't leave them, that he was their hero.
His parents strongly believed that Mateusz would get back on his feet, they told him that this was a temporary state, that he had to treat this fight as the MOST IMPORTANT COMPETITION IN HIS LIFE and that he had to win it.
Every day, Mateusz proves to all of us what a hero he is.
About three weeks after the accident, he began to follow his gaze, grasp his right hand, gently move his right foot, respond to voice, and attempt to follow commands. His left arm and leg are paralyzed.
Due to the injuries sustained, specialist care at a rehabilitation center was necessary.
From June 27, 2022, to September 20, 2022, Mateusz was admitted to PCRF Votum in Krakow, where he underwent intensive rehabilitation. Each day, Mateusz overcame new barriers. The beginning was difficult, but each day he demonstrated his fighting spirit and his determination to return to mobility and independence as quickly as possible. We are amazed at his improvement.
Rehabilitation consists of dysphagia and communication classes, as well as ophthalmological, neurological and psychological consultations .
Every day, Mateusz had 3 hours of functional rehabilitation, including verticalization.
It might seem like a short time – 3 hours – but for Mateusz, every hour was a great challenge.
During this period, it was possible to communicate with Mateusz through gestures, writing on a piece of paper, and simple verbal messages. Two weeks earlier, there had been no contact with him.
Mateusz retained his logical thinking and his retrograde memory. However, when asked about the day of the accident, he replied that he didn't remember it.
During his stay in Krakow, Mateusz re-learned to eat, drink and sit with the help of support.
About a month after arriving at the center, he had been without his tracheotomy tube, and his voice was slowly returning to a whisper.
September 21, 2022 – June 30, 2023 Mateusz was transferred to the new Vratislavia Medica rehabilitation center in Wrocław , where he waited for the date of his skull reconstruction surgery , which took place on October 3, 2023, and at the same time continued his further rehabilitation.
The operation was very extensive and complicated, but fortunately everything went according to plan and was successful.
Mateusz, meanwhile, is regaining his voice and has begun taking his first steps with the aid of a specialized walker. During his stay at the center, he begins attending swimming classes. This form of rehabilitation has helped his muscles become more relaxed, and his spasticity has become less of a problem.
During such a long stay, Mateusz took advantage of all available rehabilitation treatments that allowed him to regain mobility, e.g. SIS, laser, osylation.
In November, the PEG was removed, which means he can eat and drink well. He also managed to transition from a specialist wheelchair to a basic wheelchair.
Mateusz has been undergoing intensive rehabilitation for many months, bringing him closer to recovery and, therefore, independence. His health is improving daily.
From July 2023 to the present, Mateusz continues neurological rehabilitation at the Neurorehabilitation Clinic in Jerzmanów, where the focus is on getting him back on his feet. His left leg is beginning to respond, but his left arm remains dormant.
However, his rehabilitation does not end there.
Mateusz's swimming friends are also making a significant contribution to his recovery. One of the most important elements of his rehabilitation is returning to the water—a place that has always given him a sense of freedom and independence.
GUINNESS World Record holder Krzysztof Gajewski decided to help Mateusz and regularly rehabilitates him in the water at the Wrocław Mine – Holiday Zone , where they train together and learn to swim again. Mateusz previously swam alongside Gajewski and they participated in various competitions together.
Other athletes also offered help with rehabilitation, both from the swimming community, where Mateusz was regularly involved, and from other sports.
Additionally, physiotherapist Maciek comes to the house 2 or 3 times a week , whose rehabilitation consists of general development exercises, learning how to go up and down stairs, strengthening all parts of the body, and learning how to walk in a pattern.
In February 2024, Mateusz's condition improved so much that it was decided to move him from his standard wheelchair to an active wheelchair for hemiplegics, i.e. people with unilateral paralysis.
This wheelchair is designed to make daily life as easy as possible for people with this condition. Equipped with a professional one-handed drive mechanism, it allows for comfortable and effective maneuvering.
From April 2024 to the present day, Mateusz is taken twice a week to a masseur and rehabilitator, Piotr , who uses various massage techniques to improve his facial expressions and relax tense parts of the body, and also teaches Mateusz how to walk using a rehabilitation walker.
From September 2024, Mati began attending rehabilitation classes at the WDO-MED Neurological Rehabilitation Center.
MATEUSZ's goal is the 2028 PARALYMPICS , but until then he wants to achieve other successes, proving to all of us that " ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE ".
NIGHT SWIM OPEN WATER 2024: 31/08/24 – Wrocław Mine – Holiday Zone: Mateusz swims 100 meters being paralyzed on the left side .
SKY TOWER RUN: 17/10/24 – Mateusz climbs 49 floors, takes 1142 steps in the SKY TOWER in Wrocław
RUN WITH A MUSTACHE: 11/11/24 – Olympic Stadium – Mateusz has to cover a 5km route on his own two feet.
